IBI Group was retained as prime consultant for this mixed-use development on one of the last remaining sites in Coal Harbour, creating a contemporary landmark in Vancouver’s most prestigious waterfront neighbourhood. Cantilevering at 22 ft. out from base to tip at the end of each site, its prism-like glass form adds to the collection of notable buildings in Coal Harbour.
Floor to ceiling windows and curtain wall construction give the appearance it was carved from a solid block of glass, creating dramatic, faceted towers that have become a striking addition to the city skyline. Balconies and projections were minimized in design to emphasize the building’s unique shape, which was derived from a simple geometric form shifted slightly at each level of the towers. This ‘pure’ design concept is strengthened through the contrasting, random, and playful detailing in the skin.
At night, passersby get to enjoy a public art light wall installation, with LED lights creating a subtle shifting colour wash, illuminating the building’s south elevation. The 36-storey programmable installation transforms a slender vertical ribbon of architectural concrete into a dynamic work of art.
West Pender Place is an architectural triumph punctuating its world-renowned surroundings. An example of contemporary modernism, it brings a whole new look to the upscale neighbourhood, enhancing Coal Harbour’s reputation as a high-rise haven with picturesque views.
